Hamilton unconcerned by Ferrari F1 test pace
Lewis Hamilton dismisses Ferrari’s pace during pre-season F1 testing in Jerez as down to completing shorter, low fuel runs.
Lewis Hamilton has played down Ferrari’s timesheet-topping pace during the first pre-season F1 test in Jerez, dismissing the laps as on low fuel loads.
The reigning champion completed more than 200 laps in his two days in the new W06, though his progress was hampered by a session-stopping spin and minor technical niggles.
Setting the sixth fastest time in the test as Mercedes focused primarily on reliability and mileage, Hamilton was quizzed on whether he had been impressed by the pace of Ferrari after it topped three of the four days and came away the fastest lap overall.
However, Hamilton says he hasn’t been focusing on his rivals and remained certain that Ferrari’s pace was partly down it completed shorter, low fuel runs.
“I haven’t really been looking [at rivals]. I’ve just been doing my own thing. I’m sure we’re on different fuel loads to others – they look like they’re doing shorter runs, more qualifying modes, which we are not.”
Raikkonen, Sebastian Vettel and Felipe Nasr in the Ferrari-powered Sauber shared the fastest times during the Jerez test, though Mercedes was notable for completing more than 500 laps.
