Great Britain’s Heather Watson progressed to the second round of the Hobart International after beating Magdalena Rybarikova 7-5 6-1.
The 22-year-old world number 49 ensured her preparation for the Australian Open remained on track as she eased through to line up a match with fifth seed Sloane Stephens.
Top seed Casey Dellacqua defeated Lauren Davis to also move into the second round.
Australian Dellacqua dropped a set against her American opponent but came through to win 6-4 1-6 6-4 on Monday.
Number two seed Zarina Diyas eased to a 6-3 6-4 win over Spain’s Silvia Soler-Espinosa
Eighth seed Alison Riske of the United States progressed after Christina McHale retired from their match after Riske had taken the first set 6-4.
Italy’s Roberta Vinci came through 6-1 4-6 6-3 against wildcard Olivia Rogowska while third seed Camila Giorgi came from a set down to beat Storm Sanders 5-7 6-1 7-6 (8/6).
Karin Knapp, Kateryna Kozlova, Johanna Larsson, Annika Beck and Bojana Jovanovski also progressed.
