Nico Hulkenberg says he is expecting ‘spectacular’ things from his 2015 F1 season as he looks to build on what he claims was his best R1 season yet.
Though it didn’t yield the much vaunted maiden F1 podium he has been chasing, Nico Hulkenberg believes he can take momentum through to the 2015 F1 season in the wake of what he claims was his ‘best year’ yet.
The German returned to the Force India stable after a season with Sauber in 2014 and though he was the only driver inside the overall top ten not to mount the rostrum, his regular point-scoring saw him finish this year comfortably ahead of team-mate Sergio Perez.
Heading into 2015, Hulkenberg makes positive noises about his chances with the Mercedes-powered VJM08, insisting his consistency and ability to challenge from less-than-encouraging grid positions in 2014 put him in good stead for the new season.
“I believe 2014 was my best year in Formula One so far,” he said. “It was the moment when I felt I really arrived and became comfortable with everything that surrounds the job. The main thing I learned is that even if you struggle in qualifying, there is still a good opportunity to have a strong race. It’s more important to have consistent race pace and the right strategy on Sunday. We proved that on several occasions last year.
“I hope for spectacular things [in 2015]. That means scoring many points, great racing and lots of fun. I’m part of a team that is growing and hungry for more. 2014 was our best season yet so we need to aim to go a step further this year and give the teams ahead of us a harder time.”
The first time he has spent two consecutive seasons with the same team – which launched its 2015 F1 challenge with a livery reveal in Mexico City – Hulkenberg, says the stability of not having to move can only aid him this year.
“It makes a big difference not having to adapt to new surroundings. It means you don’t have that learning period when you have to get to know the people and adapt to the way a team works. So I think it takes the pressure off a little bit and you can focus all your energy on driving and improving the car.”
Despite the early launch, the definitive VJM08 will not be seen until the second pre-season F1 test in Barcelona. The first Jerez test on February 1st will see Hulkenberg and Perez driving an upgraded version of last year’s VJM07.
