Louis van Gaal Doesn’t Regret Danny Welbeck Sale Despite FA Cup Winner
Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal insists he holds no regrets about selling Danny Welbeck to Arsenal despite his former striker knocking United out of the FA Cup on Monday night.
Sky Sports report that van Gaal still favours loan signing Radamel Falcao over the England international, despite the fact he has scored only four goals this season and he failed to appear when United needed a goal when trailing 2-1.
The Gunners advanced to the semi-finals through Nacho Monreal's first half goal and Welbeck then capitalised on a mistake from Antonio Valencia to score the winner. Wayne Rooney equalised for United in the first half.
Van Gaal said of any possible regret: “He (Falcao) has scored four goals, had three or four assists and he stimulates the other players, so that is an aspect of the profession. But it is now easy for you to say that and you are happy to say that.
“It’s very disappointing when you give the victory to your opponent. When you haven’t lost because of the opposition, you have lost because of yourself.
“The players are very disappointed because they know that it could be different. Matches are decided by goals and you see the second goal, it was nothing, we gave it away. The man who did that was the best man of my team and that’s also disappointing for him.”
Angel Di Maria was also dismissed on the night for grabbing the shirt of referee Michael Oliver, and van Gaal had no complaints.
He continued: "I think he's touched the referee and that's forbidden in every country, so he has no excuses.
"In Spain he knows that he doesn't touch the referee, but that is also in his emotion. I've already spoken with him, he knows my opinion but also I have to see on the video."
Di Maria will now miss United's crucial match with Tottenham at the weekend.
