Puig progress in Pattaya
Monica Puig swept to a straight-sets victory over Stefanie Voegele in the first round of the Pattaya Open on Monday.
The seventh-seeded Puerto Rican raced to a 6-2 win in the first set before her Swiss opponent put up a fight in the second, Puig eventually winning it 7-6 (7-4) on a tie-break to advance.
Romina Oprandi claimed a straight-forward victory over Elena Vesnina to reach the second round in Thailand.
The 28-year-old Swiss saved nine break points as she moved past her Russian opponent with a 6-3 6-3 triumph in an hour and 20 minutes.
Also on Monday, Russia’s Evgeniya Rodina reached the second round as she held on for a 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 victory over Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan.
Former world number two Vera Zvonareva saw off China’s Wang Qiang with an easy 6-2 6-2 win.
