Lakers edge Bulls in overtime
A review of Thursday’s action in basketball’s NBA, including a double-overtime win for the LA Lakes over the Chicago Bulls.
The struggling Los Angeles Lakers lifted some of the gloom surrounding them with a tense double-overtime win over the Chicago Bulls.
With only 12 wins from their first 46 games of the NBA season and having again lost key man Kobe Bryant for the season to a serious injury, the Lakers needed a boost.
And they got it as Jordan Hill scored 26 points and Wayne Ellington 23 in an eventual 123-118 win.
Pau Gasol forced overtime and Chicago led by five in the first extra period but the Lakers forced a second and pulled away to win.
Jimmy Butler marked his selection as a reserve for the All-Star game with 35 points in vain for Chicago while Gasol contributed 20.
Chicago’s Central Division rivals and fellow play-off hopefuls the Milwaukee Bucks won away to the Orlando Magic for the first time in 17 games dating back to 2004 as seven players reached double figures in a 115-100 success.
Jerryd Bayless led the way with 19 points while Jared Dudley and Khris Middleton added 17 apiece.
Zach Randolph led the Memphis Grizzlies to victory over the Denver Nuggets as they moved two games clear in the Southwest Division.
Randolph had 15 points and 17 rebounds in a 99-69 win, the Grizzlies’ fifth in succession. Denver’s top scorers, Wilson Chandler and Kenneth Faried, had only 10 points each.
The Indiana Pacers beat the New York Knicks 103-82 with 22 points from Rodney Stuckey and 18 from Roy Hibbert.
Meanwhile, Oklahoma City Thunder pair Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook were joined in the Western Conference All-Star reserves by James Harden, Chris Paul, Tim Duncan, LaMarcus Aldridge and Klay Thompson.
In the East, Kyrie Irving was unsurprisingly included after rubber-stamping his credentials with 55 points in the Cleveland Cavaliers’ 99-94 win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Thursday.
Atlanta Hawks trio Paul Millsap, Al Horford and Jeff Teague were also selected along with Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat and Butler.
