Qualifier Jiri Vesely upset Ernests Gulbis to reach the quarter-finals of the Heineken Open as the tournament saw more of its big names fall.
Second seed Gulbis was unable to play in Doha last week because of illness and looked rusty in a 6-2 3-6 6-1 defeat by Czech Vesely.
David Ferrer, John Isner, Gael Monfils and Tommy Robredo all pulled out before playing their first match, and third seed Roberto Bautista Agut succumbed to illness while trailing Adrian Mannarino 6-2 2-1 on Wednesday.
Only two seeds have made it through to the last eight, with Kevin Anderson overcoming Jan-Lennard Struff 7-6 (8/6) 6-1 and Steve Johnson a 6-7 (3/7) 6-4 6-1 winner over Pablo Carreno Busta.
The pair will play each other next for the second year in a row in Auckland, Johnson having emerged victorious last time.
Home interest was ended when lucky loser Lucas Pouille defeated wild card Michael Venus, while there were also wins for Albert Ramos-Vinolas, Donald Young and Alejandro Falla.
