The Dallas Mavericks withstood a triple-double from Russell Westbrook to beat the Oklahoma City Thunder by a massive 135-131 scoreline in NBA action on Wednesday.
Monta Ellis contributed 26 points, five assists and four rebounds for the Mavericks, who returned to winning ways as they shot 61.5 per cent from the field. Dirk Nowitzki also became the seventh player in history to pass 28,000 points.
Oklahoma guard Anthony Morrow (32) top scored for Thunder, while Westbrook scored 31 with 11 assists and 11 rebounds and Enes Kanter weighed in with 30 for the losing side.
The New Orleans Pelicans made it three straight wins to pile the pressure on the Thunder as they saw off the Los Angeles Lakers 113-92.
James Harden impressed with a career-high 51-point haul, helping his Houston Rockets down the Sacramento Kings 115-111, while Charlotte cruised to a 102-78 thrashing of the Detroit Pistons and champions the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Orlando Magic 103-91.
The race for spot in the Eastern Conference’s top eight remains well and truly on, with Boston and Brooklyn both posting valuable wins.
The Nets and Celtics joined the Miami Heat on 34 wins. Brooklyn’s fifth-straight victory saw them edge the New York Knicks 100-98, with Brook Lopez’s (18) late tip-in sparing their blushes against bottom side Knicks, who suffered their eighth straight defeat.
The Nets remain in eighth spot despite the Celtics claiming a 100-87 triumph over the Indiana Pacers.
Elsewhere, the Washington Wizards trumped the Philadelphia 76ers 106-93, the Milwaukee Bucks moved closer to sealing the East’s sixth seeding with a 95-91 win over the Chicago Bulls and the Los Angeles Clippers held off the Portland Trail Blazers 126-122.
The Toronto Raptors had seven players shoot 10-plus points in their 113-99 win over West strugglers the Minnesota Timberwolves, while the Utah Jazz made it three straight wins as they moved past the Denver Nuggets 98-84.
