Bouchard beaten in Charleston
Top seed Eugenie Bouchard is out of the Family Circle Cup after crashing to a 6-3 6-1 loss to rising star Lauren Davis.
Bouchard, the world number seven who reached the semi-finals last year, had no answer as Davis was in aggressive mood, hitting 18 winners while Bouchard committed 33 unforced errors.
“I’d never beaten her before, so I came out knowing I had nothing to lose,” Davis said on the WTA website.
“I knew to beat her I’d have to be fearless – I saw this as a great opportunity.”
Number four Sara Errani needed more than two hours to see off last year’s finalist Jana Cepelova 6-3 7-6 (7/5), while 15th seed Mona Barthel withstood a late fightback to beat Sloane Stephens 6-3 7-6 (7/2).
Seventh seed Madison Keys beat qualifier Kateryna Bondarenko 6-2 6-1.
Two other seeds followed Bouchard out of the competition, as number nine Samantha Stosur lost 6-3 3-6 6-4 to Lara Arruabarrena, while qualifier Danka Kovinic saw off 12th seed Belinda Bencic 4-6 6-3 6-2.
Fellow qualifier Sara Sorribes Tormo saw off Shelby Rogers 7-5 6-1, while there was also wins for Ekaterina Makarova, Irina-Camelia Begu, Madison Brengle and Andreea Mitu.
