Manchester United 3-0 Tottenham: Red Devils ‘Kane’ Spurs in Race for Top 4

Manchester United produced a stunning first-half display as they hammered Tottenham to move six points clear of their opponents in the race for the top four.

United hadn't beaten Spurs at Old Trafford since August 2011, but they took the lead inside ten minutes through Marouane Fellaini, before goals from Spurs old-boy Michael Carrick and captain Wayne Rooney sealed the points for United who led 3-0 at half time.

Both sides made changes ahead of the crucial tie, with United offering starts to Phil Jones, Carrick, and Juan Mata, while Danny Rose replaced Ben Davies at left back for the visitors.

The Old Trafford atmosphere had an air of nervousness about it in the opening minutes, and Jones did nothing to ease the tension when his misplaced back pace had to be turned behind for a Spurs corner by the legs of David De Gea who reacted quickly to protect his near post.

United failed to deal with the resulting corner, and and Harry Kane touched the ball away from the unmarked Jan Vertonghen who would have been left with a tap in at the back stick.

The hosts quickly responded but Wayne Rooney's good run was undermined by a poor cut back which was a touch too far behind Mata's run.
