Chelsea Set to Break Contract ‘Rule’ and Offer Ivanovic New Four-Year Deal
Chelsea are set to break their own "rule" of only offering over-30 players one-year contracts by issuing Branislav Ivanovic with a new four-year deal, according to the Star.
The 31-year-old currently pockets £75,000-a-week, but has been one of the club's most consistent performers since Mourinho returned to Stamford Bridge for a second spell. His current contract is up in 2016, but Chelsea are looking to secure the player beyond then.
It is reported that the Blues will offer the Serbian £90,000-a-week to seal the deal.
Ivanovic will be a part of the Chelsea side that on Wednesday looks to negotiate their way into the Champions League quarter-finals. The Blues play Paris Saint Germain at Stamford Bridge with matters all square from the first leg, after Ivanovic scored in their 1-1 draw.
Defensive partner Gary Cahill believes Chelsea's extended rest before the tie could give his side the edge. According to the Star, he said: "We have had more time than we usually would to rest up and prepare in training for a good three or four days before the game.
"We've been able to really work on specific things in preparation for it. We know the quality of PSG and the job that lies ahead of us.
"It's going to be like a final, a big one-off game, and we'll be ready to go out there and give it everything we have to get us into the next round."
